To start trading futures online on Liquid, sign up, fund your account with a card, transfer, or USDC, practice in paper mode, and then open a small perpetual futures position. Liquid perps have no expiry, are sized in dollars rather than whole contracts, and sit in a non-custodial account. Crypto perps trade 24/7, and eligible markets offer multipliers of up to 50x. You can get from sign-up to a practice trade in minutes.

If you need dated exchange futures, such as CME E-minis or crude oil contracts, the route is a futures-enabled brokerage account. That usually involves a futures application, an approval step, and exchange margin per contract.

How do I start trading futures online?

1. Choose the contract type

Decide whether you want a perpetual (no expiry, funding instead of rolling, venue hours) or a dated future (expiry month, exchange clearing, exchange hours). The futures vs. perpetual futures guide explains the differences. If you want one account covering crypto, stocks, gold, FX, and indices, perps are the simpler start.

2. Open an account that carries it

Competitor details come from each provider's published pages as checked for Liquid's comparison guides in September 2026. Futures brokers typically ask about experience and finances before approving futures trading.

3. Learn the four numbers that matter

Before any trade, know your notional (total exposure), margin (collateral posted), liquidation or margin-call level, and all-in cost (fees plus funding or roll). On Liquid, the order ticket shows notional and margin together as you change the multiplier. Read what is liquidation and cross vs. isolated margin.

4. Practice with simulated funds

Paper trading uses live prices with simulated money. Practice opening a position, moving a stop, and closing, then compare the result with what you expected. On Liquid, paper trading starts you with a simulated $10,000 balance.

5. Start small, with a written exit plan

Your first live trade should be small enough that a full stop-out is a lesson, not a setback. Write down the entry reason, the stop, the target, and when you will close regardless. Attach the stop-loss when you open the trade.

Common first-month mistakes

  • Using the maximum multiplier. A high multiplier shrinks the move needed to wipe out your margin. Start at a low multiplier and raise it only once you understand your liquidation price.
  • Skipping the stop. Decide where you are wrong before entering, and place the stop with the order.
  • Ignoring holding costs. Funding on perps and roll costs on dated futures turn a flat trade into a loss over time.
  • Trading every session. Around-the-clock access does not mean you should trade around the clock. Set the hours you will actually watch positions.
  • Not reviewing. Keep a short log of entry reason, size, exit, and result. Patterns show up within a few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start trading futures online?

Choose perpetual or dated futures, open an account that carries them, fund it, practice with simulated funds, and start small with a written exit plan. On Liquid you can fund by card, transfer, or USDC and practice in paper mode with a simulated $10,000.

How much money do I need to start trading futures?

Dated futures require exchange margin per contract, so even micro contracts need a meaningful balance. Perpetuals on Liquid are sized in dollars, so you can open a small position. Never trade money you cannot afford to lose.

Can I practice futures trading without real money?

Yes. Liquid's paper trading uses live prices with a simulated $10,000 balance, and many futures brokers offer simulators.

Educational content only — not investment advice. Trading perpetual futures involves substantial risk and may not be suitable for every investor. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
