Where Can I Trade Stocks 24/7? Shares, Overnight Sessions, and Stock Perps

Liquid offers stock perpetual contracts that trade 24/7, including nights, weekends, and holidays. A stock perp is a derivative: opening one does not buy shares in the company. If you want actual shares, selected securities can trade outside regular stock-market hours through brokers with extended or overnight sessions.

The practical question is whether you want to own the stock or trade its price movement. That choice determines the account, instrument, and trading hours that fit your plan. Stock perps are useful when you want to express a view on a company outside the usual exchange session.

Where can I trade stocks 24/7?

Liquid provides stock perps that let eligible traders take long or short positions 24/7, even when the underlying exchanges are closed. Its market overview includes nights, weekends, and holidays. Liquidity, spreads, and execution can still vary, so inspect the live market and order ticket before submitting a trade.

For actual shares, check your broker's eligible-symbol list, supported sessions, and order rules. An overnight session may cover selected securities and specific days. FINRA explains that brokerage firms set parameters for extended-hours participation, including the securities, venues, and order types they support. See FINRA's extended-hours guide.

Can I buy and sell stocks outside of market hours?

Yes, if your broker supports the stock, session, and order type. The NYSE core session is 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET. Some NYSE markets also have early and late sessions, while brokers may route overnight trades to other venues. Available hours differ by venue and product; the NYSE calendar also lists holidays and early closes.

For a brokerage share order, check the session selector and time in force. An order designated for regular hours waits for that session, while an eligible overnight order can work during the supported overnight window. The order status shows whether it is queued, working, or filled.

For a stock perp on Liquid, select the company-linked market, choose long or short, and review the total exposure. An Apple-linked perpetual, for example, lets you express a view on Apple's price direction while the underlying share exchange is closed.

What changes when the stock exchange is closed?

Company announcements, earnings releases, and global events can arrive outside the regular session. With 24/7 stock perps, you can review that information and open, adjust, or close a position when it suits your schedule. That can be useful for a short-term trade or for adjusting exposure before the next exchange session.

Read the contract's reference-price details alongside its live quote. A perpetual's price reflects its own market, while the share exchange establishes its next opening price through its opening process. Keeping those prices distinct helps you interpret an overnight chart and plan when to review the position again.

Imagine you want $1,000 of exposure to a company after a news release. For a perp, specify that as total notional exposure, then review the margin required at your selected leverage. Recording both figures gives you a clear view of the position size and the capital assigned to it. Use the same units when comparing another trade.

How should I check an overnight trade?

Write down the ticker, instrument type, local time, and venue time zone. Then review the live spread, order size, and session settings. A limit order lets you specify the price at which you are willing to trade; after submission, use the order status to see how much has filled.

For perps, include expected holding time and funding payments. Set an exit plan around the price levels or events that would change your view. Liquid's stop-loss and take-profit workflow gives you tools to put that plan into the order.

On Liquid, locate the listed stock perp, read its market details, and confirm your account and jurisdiction are eligible. Paper trading lets you rehearse the entry, review the position, and close it with simulated funds. Once the workflow is familiar, you can use the same sequence to prepare a live order.
