When the stock market is closed, you can trade crypto 24/7, forex 24 hours a day on weekdays, many futures nearly around the clock, and perpetual futures on Liquid, which put crypto, stocks, indices, gold, oil, FX, and pre-IPO companies in one non-custodial account. Liquid's crypto perps never close. Its other perps can trade outside their home market's hours when the market is open, so check the live status. Eligible markets offer multipliers of up to 50x, and Liquid's prediction markets are unleveraged event contracts.

The US stock market is closed on weekday nights after 8 p.m. ET (once after-hours ends), all weekend, and on exchange holidays. Here is what still trades.

Picking a market for a closed-market idea

Match the market to the news:

  • Company news after the close (earnings, guidance): a stock perp on Liquid if the market is open, or the broker's overnight session for shares.
  • Macro or central-bank headlines: an index or FX perp, or index futures on weekdays.
  • Geopolitical or supply shocks: gold or oil perps. See trading gold and oil at night.
  • Weekend risk on a crypto or stock position: a perp hedge. See the 24/7 hedging guides.

Remember that perp prices for closed underlying markets are set by traders, not a live exchange print. Expect a reprice when the home market reopens, and size for that gap.

How prices behave when the stock market is closed

Off-hours markets are thinner. Fewer participants means wider spreads, larger price jumps on news, and orders that can move the price. For perps tied to closed markets, such as a stock or index perp on a Saturday, there is no live exchange price to anchor to. The perp trades on what buyers and sellers expect the reopening price to be.

Three habits help. Use limit orders rather than market orders when the book looks thin. Trade smaller than you would during peak hours. And treat the first minutes after the home market reopens as a separate event: the perp often converges quickly toward the new cash price, which can trigger stops.
