To hedge Tesla stock 24/7, open a short TSLA perpetual against some or all of your Tesla shares. Match the short's dollar value to the amount you want to hedge. It gains when Tesla falls, helping offset share losses, and loses when Tesla rises, reducing your upside.

The perpetual lets you manage exposure overnight and on weekends while keeping your shares. You need separate collateral for the short, and funding and price differences affect the result.

When would you hedge Tesla shares?

You might want less exposure around an earnings release or delivery update without selling your shares. Choose how much exposure to retain and how long to keep the hedge open. A partial hedge leaves room to benefit from a rally; a full hedge aims to offset most of the price move in either direction.

Keep unlike exposures separate. A Tesla short is not a precise hedge for an electric-vehicle ETF, a battery supplier, or another company associated with the same executive. Each has different cash flows and price drivers.

Which Tesla events matter for a temporary hedge?

Tesla publishes vehicle production and deliveries separately from full financial results. Its investor press releases show separate delivery updates, earnings releases, and company-compiled analyst consensus. A delivery number therefore does not answer every question about margins or profitability.

For an event-based hedge, identify the information you are waiting for:

  • Deliveries and production: The operating-volume update you want to cover.
  • Earnings and the call: Profitability, spending, and management commentary that may follow on a different date.
  • Other company developments: Product, regulatory, or operational news that can arrive outside a scheduled reporting window.

Confirm the date and time from the company. A plan to hedge “through earnings” needs to specify whether it ends after the release, after the call, or after the next liquid stock session. The announcement can produce a rally as well as a decline.

How do you size a TSLA hedge?

For a linear, closely matching contract, multiply the holding's current value by the fraction you want to hedge. This gives short notional, not the collateral required.

Suppose you own 100 TSLA shares at a hypothetical $300 price, for $30,000 of stock exposure. A 50% hedge is a $15,000 short; a full hedge is a $30,000 short. Check the contract multiplier before converting those amounts into units.

Hypothetical Tesla position, before all costs

TSLA moveShares onlyWith 50% hedgeWith 100% hedge
Down 12%−$3,600−$1,800Approximately $0
Up 12%+$3,600+$1,800Approximately $0

For the half hedge, the short gains $1,800 in the decline and loses $1,800 in the rally. The table assumes the stock and derivative move together, start at matching prices, and remain open. It excludes funding, fees, slippage, and any other adjustments.

A full hedge reduces participation in both directions. Shorting more than the exposure you own can turn the portfolio net short, leaving it vulnerable to a Tesla rally.

Can a TSLA hedge stay open overnight or on weekends?

Yes. A TSLA perpetual can remain open and tradable outside the stock session. Nasdaq's regular session is 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time on trading days; extended or overnight brokerage access is separate from weekend perpetual trading.

The Tesla perpetual market can have a different price from the last stock print. That gap is called basis. During a weekend or exchange closure, the derivative may incorporate news while the brokerage quote remains unchanged.

A weekend perp price can differ from Tesla's next opening price. Wide spreads and thin order books can also make a weekend adjustment costly, so check the price you can actually trade before changing the hedge.

What happens if Tesla rallies against the hedge?

The short loses while the stock gains, but those gains may sit in a separate brokerage account. The derivative venue does not automatically receive them as collateral.

In the example, a 12% rally costs the $15,000 short approximately $1,800 before charges. The margin account must support the loss and still meet maintenance requirements. A subsequent reversal does not restore a position that was already liquidated.

A stop loss is not a guaranteed fill price. It may reduce losses on the derivative, but if triggered, it also leaves the shares less hedged. Decide in advance how that changes your plan.

What other costs and risks should you check?

Perpetuals have funding payments. Under the usual convention, shorts receive positive funding and pay negative funding; confirm the market's rate, sign, and interval. A hedge held longer than planned can accumulate costs even if Tesla finishes near the entry price.

Add trading fees, spreads, and slippage. Outages can delay an exit, and cross margin can expose other positions to losses on this hedge.

How do you hedge Tesla stock on Liquid?

  1. Value your shares. Multiply your current TSLA share count by the current stock price.
  2. Define the event and hedge fraction. Write down the planned review time and whether you intend a partial or full offset.
  3. Open TSLA on Liquid. Check the current price and spread.
  4. Choose short and set notional. Select collateral after calculating the exposure, leaving room for an adverse rally under the actual margin rules.
  5. Review funding and liquidation. Include the full intended holding period and any exit orders in the plan.
  6. Revisit after the event. Close or resize the hedge deliberately. If you sell Tesla shares, reassess the short at the same time to avoid an unintended bearish position.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I hedge Tesla shares over a weekend?

Open a short TSLA perpetual for the portion of your shares you want to hedge. You can adjust it during the weekend, but spreads and price differences can be larger while the stock market is closed. Keep separate margin available in case Tesla rallies.

Is a Tesla delivery update the same event as earnings?

No. Tesla publishes production and delivery information separately from full financial results. A temporary hedge should specify which announcement it covers and when it will be reviewed, using the company's confirmed release dates.

What does a 50% Tesla hedge do during a 12% price move?

For a hypothetical $30,000 holding and a matching $15,000 short, a 12% decline produces an approximately $1,800 combined loss; a 12% rally produces an approximately $1,800 combined gain. This assumes matching price moves, no liquidation, and excludes all costs.

Does a stop loss guarantee my Tesla hedge stays effective?

No. A stop can slip or fail to fill under its order conditions, and closing the short removes its offsetting exposure. Plan what you will do with the shares if the derivative exits, rather than treating the stop as guaranteed portfolio protection.

Should I reduce my Tesla hedge when I sell shares?

Yes. Reduce the short as you sell shares if you want to keep the same hedge percentage. If you sell all the shares, closing the hedge avoids leaving a standalone short that loses money when Tesla rises.
