How to Hedge OpenAI Exposure 24/7
Reduce OpenAI valuation exposure with an OAI short. Learn how to size a partial hedge, manage margin and funding, and plan the exit.
Short OAI perpetuals to reduce exposure to a decline in OpenAI's valuation. You can adjust the position 24/7 on Liquid while retaining your underlying investment.
Size the short from the OpenAI-related portion you want to protect. OAI tracks company valuation, so private shares, employee awards, and fund interests can respond differently. The example below shows how to hedge part of a fund's exposure.
What kind of OpenAI exposure can you hedge?
Direct equity, employee awards, funds, and commercial partner stocks have different relationships to OpenAI's valuation:
Identify the exposure before choosing the hedge
| Holding | What an OAI short may offset | What remains |
|---|---|---|
| Direct private equity | Some company valuation sensitivity | Share-class rights, dilution, liquidity |
| Employee options or awards | Part of economic sensitivity | Vesting, strike, employment restrictions |
| Diversified fund | The OpenAI-related portion | Other holdings, fund fees, stale marks |
| Commercial partner stock | An uncertain indirect relationship | The partner's own business and market risk |
For a diversified fund, use only its OpenAI-related portion as the starting point. A $50,000 short against a $50,000 fund could substantially overhedge that exposure.
Check your investment or employment agreement for hedging restrictions. OpenAI's equity transfer policy still applies to the underlying holding; opening a derivative does not change those terms.
How is OAI priced, and why does that matter?
Each OAI price point represents $1 billion of implied company capitalization, according to Entropy's contract description. The contract settles in cash and carries no shareholder rights.
New funding, dilution, and share-class preferences can make your holding move differently from total company value. That difference is the main source of tracking risk in a private-equity hedge.
Entropy's oracle combines internal and external pricing. Its liquidation mark uses a smoothed internal price with pre-listing bounds, so derivatives trading can affect margin before your private holding gets a new valuation.
How should you size an OpenAI hedge?
Multiply the estimated OpenAI-related value by the percentage you want to hedge, adjusting for how closely the holding moves with OAI.
For illustration, suppose a $40,000 fund interest has 25% of its current value attributed to OpenAI. That is $10,000 of estimated OpenAI exposure. A hedge targeting half of that portion starts around $5,000 of short notional if the holding and derivative move proportionally.
Set the position notional first, then choose its margin. More leverage leaves less collateral to absorb a move against the short.
What does a partial OAI hedge look like?
In the hypothetical fund example, assume only the $10,000 OpenAI component changes and that it tracks OAI exactly:
| OpenAI-related change | Fund component PnL | $5,000 short PnL | Combined PnL |
|---|---|---|---|
| −30% | −$3,000 | +$1,500 | −$1,500 |
| No change | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| +30% | +$3,000 | −$1,500 | +$1,500 |
These hypothetical figures are before costs and assume an open hedge and matching moves. Funding, fees, valuation differences, and changes elsewhere in the fund affect the actual result.
The partial hedge halves both the illustrated loss and gain. A rising valuation can also create short losses before the investment gain is accessible, making margin management essential.
How does a 24/7 OpenAI hedge work?
OAI trades between private-market transactions, so you can adjust exposure as company news arrives. External valuation data can update much less often, and the perp price may diverge from a funding-round valuation or fund mark.
Check spreads, available depth, and funding before entering or resizing. A large order can move the market even when the trading screen is open around the clock.
What if there is no OpenAI IPO?
The OAI specification currently lists September 2, 2028 as its no-IPO resolution date. Entropy's rules also allow early cash settlement.
The hedge can end before your holding becomes sellable. Watch settlement notices and, if a listing occurs, check how the contract transition aligns with any share lockup.
How do you hedge OpenAI exposure on Liquid?
- Estimate the OpenAI-related value you want to protect and the hedge period.
- Open OAI.
- Calculate a short notional for the portion you want to hedge.
- Review margin, liquidation, funding, execution costs, and contract lifecycle rules.
- Monitor the underlying investment and derivative separately; rebalance when exposure or terms change.
- Close or reduce the short when the investment exposure ends.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I hedge OpenAI exposure without selling my investment?
Yes. An OAI short can reduce valuation exposure while you keep the investment. Size it to the portion you want to protect and maintain separate margin for the derivative.
What does the OAI price track?
OAI tracks implied company capitalization, with each price point representing $1 billion. Dilution and share-class rights can make your private holding move differently from that reference.
How much OAI should I short against a fund holding OpenAI?
Use the fund's OpenAI-related value, then apply your hedge percentage. For example, a $40,000 fund with 25% OpenAI exposure has about $10,000 to hedge; covering half starts around a $5,000 short if it tracks OAI closely.
What can make an OpenAI hedge lose money?
OAI can rise faster than your investment's valuation, creating a loss on the short without an equal offset. Funding, fees, and slippage also affect returns, and insufficient margin can force the hedge to close.
What happens to an OAI hedge if OpenAI does not list?
OAI has a scheduled no-IPO cash settlement and can also settle early under the venue's rules. Plan for the hedge to end before the underlying investment is necessarily sellable.
