To hedge Google stock 24/7, open a short GOOGL perpetual against the portion of your GOOG or GOOGL shares you want to hedge. The short gains when Google falls and loses when it rises, helping offset changes in your shares without selling them. Size the short to the dollar value you want to hedge, then fund its margin separately.

Liquid's perpetual market lets you adjust the hedge outside Nasdaq hours, including weekends. Funding, price differences, and liquidation can affect the result.

What does hedging Google stock mean?

If you own $20,000 of Alphabet shares and short $10,000 of GOOGL, you have approximately halved your exposure to Google's price moves before costs. You keep the shares while reducing both potential losses and potential gains.

This distinction also matters for funds. A $20,000 technology ETF is not $20,000 of Google stock. Only part of the fund is Alphabet, and its other holdings can behave differently. An Alphabet hedge cannot remove all the fund's market risk.

A short perp does not borrow or sell your brokerage shares. It is a separate derivative position with its own collateral and obligations. Start with how short perpetual positions work if that structure is new to you.

Should you hedge GOOG or GOOGL?

A GOOGL perpetual can hedge either GOOG or GOOGL shares. Both are shares in Alphabet, Google's parent company, and generally move together. Liquid's Google market uses GOOGL; size your short to the dollar value of either holding that you want to hedge. Small price differences between the two tickers can affect the exact offset.

How do you calculate a Google stock hedge?

For a linear contract that closely tracks your shares, begin with the current value of the holding and the fraction you want to offset. The hedge ratio is that fraction, not the leverage setting.

Hypothetical $20,000 Alphabet holding

Short notional = $20,000 × 50%

Target short exposure, not required margin

$10,000

Suppose you own 100 GOOGL shares at a hypothetical $200 valuation per share and open a $10,000 short. Assume the stock and perp start at the same price, move together, and the short stays open:

Common price move100 shares$10,000 shortCombined change
Down 10%−$2,000+$1,000−$1,000
Up 10%+$2,000−$1,000+$1,000

These results exclude fees, funding, dividends, and execution differences. A $20,000 short would approximately offset the full $2,000 move in either direction under the same assumptions. The reduction in downside comes with a reduction in upside.

If the contract uses a different unit or multiplier, convert notional into its quoted quantity using the actual specification. Do not assume one contract means one share.

Can you hedge Alphabet overnight and on weekends?

Yes. You can manage a GOOGL perpetual outside the stock session. Nasdaq's published regular session is 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time on trading days; broker and extended-session access vary.

Outside a live stock session, the perp can react to news while your broker displays an older share price. That creates basis risk: the difference between the derivative price and the price of the shares you own. That gap can affect how closely the hedge offsets your shares.

A weekend perp move is not a promise about Monday's opening share price. Thin liquidity, a stale reference, or a reopening gap can change the effectiveness of the hedge just when you need it.

What can make the hedge fail?

Alphabet exposure can involve advertising, cloud demand, AI investment, and legal developments. Use Alphabet's investor releases to verify scheduled announcements rather than assuming every technology-stock headline affects Google equally.

The hedge itself introduces separate risks:

  • Funding: Under the convention described in Liquid's funding documentation, positive funding means longs pay shorts; negative funding means shorts pay longs. Check the interval and rate, which can change.
  • Execution: Spreads and slippage can make entry and exit more expensive than the displayed reference suggests.
  • Margin: A rally produces losses on the short even when your shares gain. Brokerage gains do not automatically collateralize the perp.
  • Account and venue risk: Cross margin can expose other collateral; outages can delay adjustments or exits.

How do you hedge Google stock on Liquid?

  1. Value your shares. Use the current dollar value of your GOOG or GOOGL holding. For employee shares or awards, check your employer's hedging restrictions.
  2. Set the scope. Choose a hedge percentage and an end condition, such as reviewing the position after an earnings release.
  3. Open GOOGL on Liquid and select short.
  4. Enter the target notional. Choose collateral to support that exposure; increasing leverage does not improve the hedge.
  5. Review both directions. Check funding, fees, spread, margin mode, and liquidation price against a potential rally as well as a decline.
  6. Monitor and unwind deliberately. Reassess when the holding changes or the event passes. Selling shares without reducing the short can leave a naked bearish position.

A stop loss can help manage the derivative, but it does not guarantee a fill and closing the short removes its protection. Plan the two positions together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I hedge Google stock 24/7?

Open a short GOOGL perpetual for the dollar value of Google shares you want to hedge. The short gains when Google falls and loses when it rises. You can manage it outside Nasdaq hours, including weekends, but need separate margin and must account for funding and price differences.

Can a GOOGL perpetual hedge GOOG shares?

Yes. GOOG and GOOGL are shares in the same company and generally move together, so a GOOGL short can hedge either. Size the short to the dollar value you want to hedge.

How large is a 50% hedge on $20,000 of Google stock?

A $10,000 short hedges roughly half of a $20,000 Google holding. If both prices fall 10%, the shares lose $2,000 and the short gains $1,000 before costs. The $10,000 is the size of the exposure; you choose the margin deposit separately.

Will my Alphabet shares prevent liquidation of the hedge?

No. Gains on shares held at a separate broker do not automatically fund the perpetual account. If the short's margin falls below its maintenance requirement during a rally, it can be liquidated even when the shares have gained.

Does a Google hedge still let me benefit from a stock rally?

Yes, with a partial hedge. Hedging half your holding leaves roughly half the upside and downside before costs. A full hedge aims to offset both gains and losses, so you give up most of the benefit of a rally too.
