**To hedge SpaceX stock 24/7, open a short SPCX perpetual sized to the portion of your shares you want to hedge.** The short gains when SpaceX falls and loses when it rises, reducing both downside and upside. It needs its own collateral, even when the shares gain value in another account.

SpaceX is no longer just a pre-IPO example: [Nasdaq reported its public debut under SPCX in June 2026](https://www.nasdaq.com/newsroom/spacex-makes-history-raising-85-billion-through-nasdaq-listing). This guide uses that listed-stock context. Existing private or restricted holdings can still require a different analysis.

## What SpaceX exposure are you trying to hedge?

For public SPCX shares, start with the current value of your holding. Restricted shares, employee awards, and private funds need a little more care:

- **Public shares:** Multiply your share count by the current stock price.
- **Restricted or employee shares:** Check vesting, lockups, transfer rules, and any restrictions on hedging before assuming you can act on the position.
- **A fund or special-purpose vehicle:** The interest may include fees, other assets, or redemption terms that make its value differ from the public share price.

Use [SpaceX's investor-relations site](https://ir.spacex.com/) and the documents for the instrument you actually own when checking its status. A public listing does not by itself remove every restriction on previously issued shares.

## Does a SpaceX perp represent a share or a valuation?

Liquid's [SpaceX market](/markets/spacex) routes to the SPCX perpetual. Size a new hedge in dollars, then check the order's displayed exposure before submitting it.

If you held a SpaceX perp before the listing, review its transition terms. Older pre-IPO contracts may have used company-valuation units, which are different from a listed share price. An old contract quantity may therefore need adjusting.

## How do you size a SpaceX stock hedge?

For a linear perp that closely tracks the same listed shares, a starting calculation is **holding value × hedge fraction = target short notional**. It estimates price exposure, not the amount of cash needed as margin.

Imagine 100 matching SPCX shares at a hypothetical $150 each, for a $15,000 holding. A 50% hedge targets a $7,500 short; a full hedge targets $15,000. Assume the stock and derivative begin at the same price, move together, and remain open:

<CompareTable

  columns={["Price move", "Shares", "50% hedge short", "Combined change"]}
  rows={[
    { label: "Down 10%", values: ["−$1,500", "+$750", "−$750"] },
    { label: "Up 10%", values: ["+$1,500", "−$750", "+$750"] }
  ]}

With a $15,000 short, the directional changes would approximately cancel in either direction. Full hedging therefore sacrifices the matching upside as well as reducing downside. The example excludes funding, fees, slippage, corporate actions, and any mismatch between your actual holding and the reference.

For restricted shares or a private vehicle, matching headline dollar values may be especially imprecise. Differences in valuation, liquidity, and rights can persist even when the public stock moves sharply. A stated private valuation is not necessarily a realizable sale price.

## Can you hedge SpaceX outside stock-market hours?

Yes. An SPCX perpetual lets you manage a hedge outside the stock session. Nasdaq's [regular trading session](https://www.nasdaq.com/market-activity) runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time on trading days. The derivative's access schedule is distinct from exchange or brokerage hours.

Launch developments, operating updates, and other company news can arrive during a closure. A live perp order book may price that information before a new listed-stock quote exists. The difference between the derivative price and the underlying share price is basis risk.

A weekend perp rally can create margin losses while the shares show a stale brokerage value. The gap may change again when the exchange opens, so keep collateral available through the closure.

## What can go wrong with a SpaceX hedge?

A public-share derivative may not closely track a restricted holding or private fund. Fees, sale restrictions, and different valuations can leave part of that exposure unhedged.

Margin is another practical risk. A rising stock increases your holding's value while creating losses on the short, and those losses must be funded separately.

<Callout variant="warn" title="Restricted shares cannot be treated as ready margin">
Do not assume you can sell or pledge restricted SpaceX holdings to fund a losing short. The perp can be liquidated even when those holdings have gained on paper. Verify your restrictions and read [how liquidation works](/learn/what-is-liquidation).

Other costs include spreads, fees, slippage, and [funding](/learn/what-are-funding-rates). With the usual funding convention, shorts receive positive funding and pay negative funding; check the live rate and interval. Collateral, oracle, and venue failures can also disrupt a hedge. A stop order is not a guaranteed exit price.

## How do you hedge SpaceX stock on Liquid?

1. **Identify the holding precisely.** Distinguish public SPCX shares from restricted shares, awards, or a private-vehicle interest.
2. **Check restrictions.** For employee shares or a private fund, review whether hedging is allowed and how the holding is valued.
3. **Set a percentage and review date.** Calculate target short notional from the actual exposure rather than from a headline company valuation.
4. **Open [SPCX on Liquid](https://app.liquid.trade/trade/xyz:SPCX).** Select short, enter your target dollar exposure, and review the price and spread.
5. **Fund the margin independently.** Review fees, funding, margin mode, and liquidation under a possible rally without assuming cash can be raised from locked shares.
6. **Reconcile after changes.** Reassess the hedge when restrictions expire, shares are sold, or contract terms change. Closing the holding while leaving the short open changes the strategy into a bearish trade.
